It’s hard to admit, but we all suck up big time all the time. There’s nothing new about it. Some might fail less at playing a sport but might fail more at cooking, but we do fail or mess up almost every day.
There are two types of people – one who is happy he made a mistake and continues on with his life and the other one who is sad, probably cursing themselves saying things like “I’m born for Nothing!”
If you’re the latter, that’s great! No, it’s seriously great. Below I’ll discuss 8 reasons why you fail along with how to not fail and achieve success in life.
In school, our teachers punished us for making mistakes.
Our parents keep reminding us to never make mistakes when we have a competition or an event to attend or even when we play a sport.
From childhood, we have developed a mindset that making mistakes and failing means we are not capable of doing anything.
If we fail we quit and try something else, probably fail at it again and move to the next best thing to do.
If the term “Failing is Quitting” is true then how did Oprah Winfrey or Bill Gates or any successful person succeed in life?
During their journey, they had failed at almost every step, yet they stood up and got stronger instead of quitting which is the norm if we fail.
Let’s say you don’t know how to play football, thus you’ll quit the football coaching classor and never play as fear of being laughed at drives in.
If you study the rich and the successful, you’ll observe that most of them failed a couple of times before they succeeded, a few lost all their wealth and regained it again.
And that’s because they never did Quit! They just failed and continued on their path.
8 Reasons Why You Fail (Learn To Succeed)
1. Fear of Failure
This is by far the biggest reason why we all fail. We fear what others might think, we fear as to why we fail all the time. Fear is a drug and definitely not a good one. It eats you internally making you feel like garbage which leads to more failures.
Failing is good, we now know that the method by which we failed won’t work and we learned something but my mind doesn’t accept that at first. Learn to overcome your fear.
Next time you fear failure, pat yourself on the back and say “wow I’m so lucky” because as Albert Einstein quoted, “I have not failed. I have found 10,000 ways that don’t work”, similarly even you should be glad you found a way which didn’t work out and keep trying to achieve your goals.
2. Giving up too early
You’ve just started a business a month ago and you’re not making any profits. You get demotivated and you quit! That’s exactly what you shouldn’t do. The road to financial freedom or success in a field is tough, very tough and there are a lot of bumps along the way.
So don’t expect to get any results anytime soon. Please try a business for years and years before they achieve massive success. If you start a business or learn a new skill or work at a new job, keep in mind that it will take time for you to adjust to the atmosphere and learn everything you have to.
Next time you feel like giving up, sit down and think, should you really quit just because you’re not getting results? You’re not making any money? Maybe you’re just at the tip to achieve success, just a little bit of effort and there you are. So don’t give up, change the way you think and try again.
3. Wanting fast results
Take a deep breath in, seriously a deep breath in and gently breath out. Now tell me how much time did you take to do it? 5 seconds at most? Now breath in and out like you normally do. You might take less than 2 seconds.
This is because good things take time, sometimes they take a lot of time. We want fast results, if we start an online business today, we want to see our profits coming in right from day 1.
Now that’s totally okay and some achieve that goal as they have mastered that business or the primary skillset necessary for that business. You need to constantly keep pushing yourself in the right direction without expecting any immediate rewards.
If you want to achieve great things, learn to wait for it.
Social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube have a great influence on us. A lot of influencers keep sharing their success stories by clicking pictures and shooting videos with top-notch cars and big houses, expensive jewellery, all to convince us that success is within our arms reach, we just need to put forth our hand and grab it.
Most of these are just scamming you into buying something from them. Some do make it big fast but that’s only because they have devoted their time and efforts towards their goals. Remember there are no shortcuts in life.
4. Dreaming BIG
The first step most books tell us is to Dream Big. Don’t get me wrong, you should dream big, but you need to set your expectations closer to your reality.
What I mean is almost always set up high expectations like I want to buy an island or I want a million dollars and those are some great realistic goals to accomplish but in order to fulfill these goals, you need to work that hard.
Note: The bigger the goals, the more hard work.
As we discussed in the previous point, success takes time to reach you, provided you work hard and devote your time to it. Buying an island is a great goal but you need to think of ways to generate that much cash and work towards it.
Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin, owns Necker Island. You can check his life story by reading his best-selling book – Losing My Virginity. It’s a great book for anyone who wants to make it big in life.
5. You Hate seeking advice from anyone
Remind me, since how long are you in this business? 6 months? 1 year? 3 years? And you think you know everything right. I’m pretty sure there are many people in the same niche as you’re in who have much more experience and knowledge than you have.
If only you asked them how they did it, you may never have to give up on your goal. They’ve walked the walk, they know exactly how you can make it big, and the great thing – they can give you real shortcuts.
But not all advances were made equal. You need to be sure from whom you take advice, is that person credible? Does he/she have a business or knowledge in the exact field as you are in? If Yes, talk to them and see how their years of expertise can help you make a profit.
Get feedback from your customers, your readers, viewers about how you are performing and how changes you can do to make it better for them. Surely the feedback you might get will hurt you, but in the long run, it will only make you better.
Don’t let ego slip in and spoil your chance of achieving success.
6. Lack of planning
“If you fail to plan you’re planning to fail.” – Benjamin Franklin.
Listen up, you need to have a plan. It’s a must to start with anything. Surely your plan will pivot as you learn more about how to do business or learn a skill or work effectively in a company. But you need to start with a basic plan.
A good plan should be logical, realistic, attainable, and measurable. Not only that you also need to have a contingency plan. If all goes north, what will you do? You need to have a contingency plan in such cases.
No plan simply means you’re less likely to succeed. So start with creating a great plan, analyzing it, and then implementing it.
7. You’re too distracted
Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, Tinder, Twitter, that trendy hashtag on Instagram, back to Facebook, did my friend just post 10 photos today, why am I not tweeting anything, is that cat real, Facebook memes, Instagram memes, Reddit dog memes, Netflix please (how could I forget) repeat every day.
I’m sorry if I made you feel at home. This is what most people do every day if this is your daily schedule, when exactly do you work towards your goals? When do you get productive and learn a new skill?
You see, social media takes all of your time, try social media detox for a week and analyze yourself. I’m pretty sure that week you will be more productive than the last month. So instead of scrolling and chilling on Netflix, invest your time to read books, learn new skills, exercise.
8. You Procrastinate a lot
We all procrastinate every day, whether it’s studying for an exam, working from home, exercising, or even getting up in the morning. Anything which will improve you will bore you, and as long as the activity bores you and the chances of you procrastinating the activity is high.
As long as people live, procrastination will continue to hinder our productivity and avoid us doing the necessary work at that moment.
A few disadvantages of procrastination are:
- Increased anxiety
- Lower self-esteem
- Fatigue
- Poor academic or work performance
- You lose precious time
- Increased stress
You see, procrastination is fatal and that’s why you need to control it as soon as you can.
Here’s an article where I’ve covered procrastination in-depth – 8 ways to eliminate procrastination. Understand and implement it to see a completely transformed, highly productive person.
Does Failing Make You A Failure?
It’s okay to fail. Failure teaches you a lot of things like being more determined, more flexible, you realize that you don’t always have to be right, you seek help when needed and most importantly, you keep your Ego away.
You’ll never meet someone successful who hasn’t had his/her share of failures. But that doesn’t mean you should fail all the time. It means if you fail, that’s okay, it’s just another tiny problem you need to solve in order to move to the next step.
If you stop learning to improve yourself every day, you are surrendering to failure. Make it a point to learn daily so that you reduce your chances to fail.
Failure isn’t the end of the road. If someone tells you it is, maintains your distance from them.
It’s better to avoid having negative people surrounding you on your path to success.
